  • What is CIRTA?
CIRTA (California Interscholastic Referees Training Association) is a professional organization dedicated to training and certifying referees for interscholastic sports, including basketball, volleyball, softball, and flag football. Our mission is to ensure that referees are well-prepared to officiate games with fairness, integrity, and expertise.
  • Who can enroll in CIRTA's programs?
Our programs are open to anyone interested in becoming a certified referee, regardless of prior experience. Whether you are a newcomer to officiating or an experienced referee looking to advance your skills, CIRTA offers training and certification programs suited to all levels.
  • What sports does CIRTA offer training for?
CIRTA currently offers training and certification programs for basketball, volleyball, softball, and flag football. We continually expand our offerings, so stay tuned for new programs!
  • How long does it take to become a certified referee?
The length of time to become certified depends on the specific sport and the level of certification you are pursuing. Typically, certification programs include a combination of classroom training, online modules, and practical on-field or on-court experience, which can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to complete.
  • What does the certification process involve?
CIRTA's certification process includes theoretical training, covering rules and regulations of the sport, and practical training through workshops, clinics, and officiating real or simulated games. After successfully completing the program, participants must pass a written and/or practical exam to earn their certification.
  • Can I take multiple sports certification programs simultaneously?
Yes, you can enroll in multiple certification programs simultaneously if your schedule allows. However, we recommend focusing on one sport at a time to ensure you fully grasp the rules and officiating techniques before moving on to another sport.
  • How do I register for a training program?
You can register for CIRTA's training programs directly through our website. Visit the "Programs" section, select the sport you’re interested in, and follow the registration instructions. If the program isn’t currently available, you can join the waitlist to be notified when it launches.
  • What kind of support can I expect during and after training?
CIRTA offers continuous support through mentorship programs, where experienced referees guide you through your officiating journey. Additionally, we provide ongoing resources, access to refresher courses, and networking opportunities within the officiating community even after you are certified.
  • Will I receive a certification upon completion?
Yes, upon successful completion of a CIRTA training program and passing the required exams, you will receive an official certification. This certification qualifies you to officiate interscholastic sports at the appropriate level.
